CEREC technology speeds up dental crown procedure

To understand how CEREC technology dramatically reduces the treatment time for dental crowns, let’s look a little more closely at the process for traditional crowns.

How dental crowns work

A dental crown is a thin, tooth shaped cap made of porcelain. It fits securely over the damaged tooth, completely covering and shielding it from further damage or decay. Traditionally, dental crowns are completed in two visits to the dentist — one appointment for preparing the tooth, and a couple weeks later, after the crown has been crafted in a far-away lab, the second appointment is scheduled for final placement.

But with CEramic REConstruction technology, or CEREC, the time in between is totally eliminated. That means Dr. Carmen is able to prepare for, create and place your dental crown in just one visit!

The CEREC process

To fit you with your new same day crown, Dr. Carmen will examine your mouth, prepare your tooth to receive the crown and take a quick digital impression of your tooth and surrounding structures. This method is fast and completely comfortable — nothing like those bad-tasting impressions of the old days.

Dr. Carmen then feeds this information into the CEREC milling machine and your crown is soon under construction. From a block of whole porcelain, your new crown is carefully created — in far less than half the time traditional crowns require.

After your device is ready, Dr. Carmen examines it for final fit. If everything is as it should be, he’ll bond it securely on top of your damaged tooth, and you walk out of our office with a smile that’s as good as new!

What dental crowns fix

If you’ve got a tooth that’s suffering from any of the following issues, a dental crown could be just the solution you need.

  • Severe breakage
  • Serious decay without enough structure for a filing
  • Fractured teeth
  • Oddly shaped teeth or severe staining
