Make Your Next Visit to Dr. Carmen More Relaxing with Sedation Dentistry

June 7, 2011

Millions of Americans avoid going to the dentist every year because of anxiety. Others put off important visits because local anesthetics don’t have an effect on them, or because neck or back pain makes sitting for long procedures uncomfortable.

Regardless of your reason, Dr. Carmen can help. With sedation dentistry, you can look forward to a relaxing visit that lets us help your smile. And because your appointment will seem to last for only a moment, we can complete more work in a single visit than would normally be possible.

Relief from Anxiety and Discomfort

Dr. Carmen’s Norman office offers three forms of sedation: nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and intravenous. If you’re not sure which form is right for you, we can help you decide.

For patients with mild anxiety, nitrous oxide may be enough to make your visit more relaxing. More commonly called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an odorless, colorless gas that’s inhaled through a nasal mask. It’s easy to control and its effects wear off quickly.

Patients who need something stronger should consider oral conscious or IV sedation. Both allow patients to remain conscious during procedures, but often patients become so relaxed they fall asleep. What’s more, should you choose either form you’ll need a friend or family member with you to drive you home, as their effects typically wear off by the following day.
