Between your co-worker’s homemade cookies and the candy canes hanging on your tree, it can be hard to resist the many delicious temptations. It’s important to remember to care for your teeth so that you don’t develop any dental issues this time of year, like tooth decay or gum disease. Thankfully, these problems can be prevented by following these 4 tips to keep your smile happy all season long.

Tip #1: Skip the Sweets

One key ingredient in many popular dishes and desserts this time of year is sugar. Whether you’ve been looking forward to pumpkin pie or can’t wait to bust into a package of candy canes, your tastebuds are sure to be delighted. Unfortunately, your pearly whites won’t thank you.

This saccharine ingredient attracts harmful bacteria that contribute to the formation of cavities. You can mitigate the damage in a few ways. If you’re baking this year, try swapping sugar for another sweetener that doesn’t hurt your teeth. If that’s not feasible, then you can limit the amount you consume or skip it altogether.

Tip #2: Dodge Dark Drinks

Many dark beverages like coffee, tea, and soda contain tannins which are infamous for staining your teeth. The liquid interacts with the enamel and can leave it looking drab. You’re better off reaching for a glass of water, instead. You can even find bubbly water in a variety of flavors to add some cheer to your cup!

Tip #3: Be Wary of Wine

Like other dark beverages, red wine can discolor your teeth. You might notice they look ruddy after you’ve had a glass or two. You might think you’re safer with a glass of white wine instead, but that also comes with risks. Most wines can leave your chompers looking splotchy, but they are also acidic and can wear down your enamel. If you plan to indulge anyway, try chasing your wine with a glass of water. It will rehydrate your body as well as neutralize the acid content in your mouth.

Tip #4: Remember Your Routine

Many people travel to visit friends and family during their winter break, and it’s tempting to let your dental hygiene regimen slide. Now more than ever it’s imperative that you keep up with twice-daily brushing and flossing, though. Many stores carry travel-sized products like toothbrushes and toothpaste to easily stow away in your luggage. You can even bring yours from home if that makes you more comfortable. Taking the time every day to maintain your routine will keep your grin in prime condition.

Avoiding unhealthy foods and keeping up with basic dental care ensures that your smile stays happy into the new year!

About the Author

Dr. Bobby J.
