You\nlike to think you\u2019re on top of your oral hygiene, but you forget to floss\nsometimes. Unfortunately, this means that your oral health isn\u2019t in as good a shape\nas you think it is. Flossing might be annoying, and many of us forget or even\noutright neglect to do it. How important is it actually? A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drbobbycarmen.com\/our-services.html\">dentist<\/a>\nin Norman is here to set the record straight about flossing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is the Truth About Flossing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Associated Press recently reported that flossing doesn\u2019t\nactually work, and that it isn\u2019t really important. However, any dental\nprofessional will tell you that\u2019s a lie. The report claims that there is little\nto no scientific evidence that cleaning between your teeth actually works to\nprevent cavities and gum disease. However, the Journal of Dental Hygiene has\npublished research stating that flossing, along with tooth brushing, helps\nreduce gingivitis at one, three, and six months. However, it does not help\nreduce plaque at one and three months. So, what does that mean for you? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens If I Don\u2019t Floss?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you go without flossing, you\u2019re at risk for two major\nproblems: cavities between your teeth, and gingivitis. Bacteria in plaque love\nto accumulate between your teeth and create cavities, and flossing is the only\nway to remove them. These bacteria can also irritate the gum tissue and cause\ngingivitis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When left untreated, gingivitis can turn into gum disease, a\ncondition where bacteria attack the structures supporting the teeth.\nEventually, this could make your teeth become loose enough to fall out! In\naddition, the bacteria create holes in between your teeth and gums through\nwhich they can enter your bloodstream and wreak havoc on other parts of your\nbody. Because of this, gum disease has been linked with multiple other health\nissues, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Diabetes <\/li><li>Pregnancy and birth complications <\/li><li>Heart disease <\/li><li>Alzheimer\u2019s <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Keep My Oral Health in Good Shape?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to prevent those health problems from occurring,\nit\u2019s crucial that you take good care of your oral health. Besides flossing\nevery day, make sure you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Clean your teeth twice a day with a\nsoft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste <\/li><li>Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco <\/li><li>Cut back on sugary foods and beverages <\/li><li>Don\u2019t use your teeth as tools to open or hold\nthings <\/li><li>Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a\nregular checkup and cleaning <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, flossing is a lot more important that it\nmight seem. Be sure to add it to your daily nighttime routine.
