Maybe you stretch the truth about your flossing habits. Or maybe you “forget” to mention that your gums bleed every time you brush. Whatever it is, chances are your dentist already knows, and they’re not judging you too much. Keep reading to see the most common fibs patients tell about their dental care and how a dentist can spot them from a mile away.

“I Floss Every Day”

This is the number one most common dental fib—and probably the easiest one to disprove (sorry.) Dentists can tell almost immediately if you’re not flossing regularly. How? Red, bleeding, and inflamed gums.

These are signs of gingivitis, often caused by plaque between the teeth. If your gums start to bleed from gentle touch with instruments, it’s a sure sign of a lack of flossing. And if hardened plaque (tartar) is abundantly present, then you have left two clues behind that expose your fib.

“I Don’t Grind My Teeth”

You may not even realize you do it, especially if it happens while you sleep. But if you swear you never grind and your dentist sees flattened tooth surfaces and small cracks or chips in your enamel, they’ll know something’s up. Chronic grinding (bruxism) is common and treatable, but only if you’re honest about the issue and open to solutions.

“My Tooth Just Started Hurting Today”

Many times, people wait to call the dentist until something really hurts. But claiming a toothache came out of nowhere won’t explain deep decay or an abscess that’s clearly been brewing for weeks. It’s okay to admit you waited. Your dentist’s job is to fix the problem, not lecture or scold you.

“I Only Drink Water”

Some patients are embarrassed by the color of their teeth, so they try to deflect at the dentist. The problem is that dark pigments and acids from drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and soda all leave telltale signs like enamel erosion or staining behind.

If you enjoy these beverages (as most people do), just be honest. Having this information will allow your dentist to recommend preventive tips before offering treatment suggestions.

The more honest you are with your dentist, the better they can help you. Dental problems don’t improve with wishful thinking, but they can get better with the right dental care. So, the next time you’re in the chair, be an open book. Your dentist has heard it all, and your teeth are already telling the real story.

About the Author

If you’re looking for a caring, judgment-free dentist in Norman, Dr. Bobby Carmen is standing by.
